Where it started

My name is Janak, and Japes' is a nickname that's kind of stuck. 

​

I started cooking in my early teens, as my Mum told me "If you want to eat meat, cook it yourself," so I did, as the majority of my family are vegetarian (pretty standard in Gujarati households).

​

I've worked in design for most of my career and love to create. I started Japes' Kitchen to create an authentic and honest culinary experience for my customers, and show off dishes I love, as I know you'll love them too.

The Family

These two ladies are at the heart of it all.

​

My mum's talents in the kitchen has no bounds, as she's always innovating, adapting, and mastering dishes. From young she's spoilt us with fresh food, cooking three or four dishes every meal, to please everyone in the house (she still does). 

​

My sister is passionate about Indian street food and is always teaching me about new ingredients, flavours, and recipes. 

​

With both of them being vegetarian since birth, their repertoire of vegetarian/vegan dishes is vast.
